Japan's consumer price index (CPI) rose 0.1 percent in January compared to the same month in 2016, representing the first increase in 13 months thanks to the recovery of crude oil prices, the government said Friday.

The rise of the index, which excludes fresh food due to its excessive volatility, shows a trend change in line with the Bank of Japan's ambitious program to break the long deflationary cycle of the world's third largest economy.
