The Tunisian suspect detained early on Wednesday by police in Germany was wanted in Tunisia for his alleged participation in the 2015 terror attack on the Bardo National Museum that killed 22 people, the German prosecutor said.

The suspect was also sought in his home country in relation to another attack in March 2016 in the southeast Tunisian border town of Ben Guerdan, according to the prosecutor.

German police earlier raided more than 50 buildings in an anti-terror operation in the western federal state of Hesse where they arrested the man who was suspected of plotting a terror attack on German soil.

According to police, plans to carry out an attack were still in the preliminary stages, and there was no concrete threat.

"With these measures, we're sending a clear message to radical Islamists in Hesse," Hesse Interior Minister, Peter Beuth said.

Such groups were under observation by the authorities, he added.

The 36-year-old Tunisian suspect was accused of recruiting for the Islamic State terror group and of having created a network of sympathizers with the aim of carrying out an attack on German soil, according to Frankfurt's prosecutor.

The man was reportedly arrested in Frankfurt at about 4:00 am local time (03:00 GMT) in an operation involving about 1,100 agents.
