Four people arrested in a southern French city on Friday were allegedly plotting a suicide terror attack, judicial sources told EFE.

Among those detained were a 16-year-old female and three men.

The counter-terror operation, which took place in the early hours of the morning in the outskirts of the southern coastal city of Montpellier, uncovered evidence of explosive materials in the residence of the four detainees.

Police said they discovered 70 grams (2.5 ounces) of acetone peroxide (TATP) as well as chemical solutions which can be combined to manufacture improvised explosives.

Initial investigative lines suggested that one of the male detainees had been preparing to carry out a suicide terror attack, although it is too early in the operation to establish when or where that could have occurred, investigators said.

The girlfriend of the suspected would-be terrorist was a 16-year-old who police said had previously attempted to enter Syria.

French police are, by law, allowed to hold the suspects in custody for up to 96 days before they must be presented to a judge.

Since the fatal terror attacks in Paris, Nov. 2015, and Nice, Jul. 2016, France has been on high terror alert across the nation.

The number of counter-terror police on patrol across French cities has substantially increased following those events.
