The humpback whale that ran aground earlier this week in the port of Montevideo and subsequently died was removed from the water on Friday, Uruguayan authorities told EFE.
The whale, which is roughly 6 meters (20 ft.) long, died late Thursday, two days after running aground.
The whale was towed by boats to the Buceo wharf, where authorities used a crane to lift the lifeless carcass onto a truck for transportation to the Montevideo dump for disposal, provincial emergency services chief Jorge Cuello said.
Veterinarians from government agencies and the Universidad de la Republica will carry out a post mortem to determine the cause of death, an official with the national water resources directorate said.
Alberto Ponce de Leon, the head of the directorate's marine mammals department, told EFE that the examination conducted when the whale first ran aground indicated that it was too ill to be moved.
While humpback whales are not common in Uruguayan waters, "it is not unusual to find one," he said.
