Russian tennis player Maria Sharapova who was banned on Wednesday for two years by the International Tennis Federation, or ITF, said she cannot accept an "unfairly harsh" decision and spoke of her intention to appeal the ruling to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, or CAS.

"While the tribunal concluded correctly that I did not intentionally violate the anti-doping rules, I cannot accept an unfairly harsh two-year suspension," Sharapova said in a statement posted on Facebook.

"The tribunal, whose members were selected by the ITF, agreed that I did not do anything intentionally wrong, yet they seek to keep me from playing tennis for two years. I will immediately appeal the suspension portion of this ruling to CAS, the Court of Arbitration for Sport," she added.

The ITF confirmed that the two-year ban is backdated to that day and ends on Jan. 26, 2018, in accordance with Article 8.1 of the anti-doping program.

The Russian, 29, who won five Grand Slam titles, explained last March in a press conference that she tested positive for meldonium, a drug she had been taking for ten years and on the list of banned substances since Jan. 1.
